Fair Housing Housing Counseling Services has partnered with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to educate the community about Fair Housing Laws and to report discrimination when and where it occurs. Federal fair housing laws make it illegal to discriminate in the sales and rental housing markets on the basis of: Race Color National Origin Religion Sex Disability Familial Status In Washington DC, there are 18 “protected classes,” under fair housing law. If you are a renter, landlord, real estate agent, home seller, rental manager, contractor, or in any way involved in the housing market these laws apply to you, whether you know the law or not. Call HCS for a detailed list of protected classes in your area. According to HUD a record 10,552 fair housing discrimination complaints were filed in fiscal year 2008. The report indicated that 44 percent of the complaints were filed by persons with disabilities while thirty-five percent alleged discrimination based on race. Report Discrimination: Discrimination in the housing market is a crime! If you feel that your right to fair housing has been violated, call Housing Counseling Services today at 202-667-7006 and ask to speak with a fair housing specialist.
