DC SCORES' mission is to inspire youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in their communities.
DC SCORES creates a positive connection for students to the school and surrounding community by creating a bridge from the school day to after-school. We strongly believe that innovative and creative after-school programming help increase a student's level of school engagement, physical fitness, self-worth, and sense of belonging in his/her community. We hire and train motivated DC public school teachers to run the program at each school, thus providing each student with direct access to a trusted mentor. Writing and soccer coaches are given a year-long curriculum, supplies and equipment, and are supported by DC SCORES program staff to ensure standardized, flexible, and contextual daily lessons. Our program maintains a low ratio of students to teachers and gives ownership to each school so that the school's community embraces the program.
DC SCORES enrolls over 700 students between the ages of eight and 14. Our program engages approximately 30 students each day at 23 public and public charter schools -- 18 elementary and five middle schools -- covering District Wards 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. During the summer, more than 100 students participate in our summer camp.

Founded in 1875, American Forests is the oldest non-profit organization in the U.S. Our mission is to grow a healthier world with trees by working with communities on local efforts that restore forest ecosystems. Our work encompasses planting trees, fostering environmental education, and improving public policy for trees at the national level. With environmental issues becoming more important each year, American Forests aims to not only be a strong advocate of forests through its newsletters, magazine, and our City Green GIS education program, but to plant trees in the areas that need it most. Projects have ranged from restoring woodlands destroyed by Katrina to improving the value of urban areas with tree plantings. Over 25 million trees have been planted through American Forests, leading to more habitats, carbon sequestration, and pollution reduction. Trees provide real benefits, which is why American Forests has been committed to forest conservation for over 125 years.

Hannah House

Hannah House is the only dual program located in Washington DC for homeless women - concentrated not only on providing transitional housing services, but also addressing each woman's needs as a whole. Hannah House serves has two populations - individual women in recovery, and recovering women with children. These programs utilize the same resources and staff and operate next door to one another - allowing Hannah House to serve as a safe, stable environment to adapt and strengthen to meet these needs.
Prior to 1996, 90% of the women on the HERS program had an average of 3 children in foster care, which is often an overlooked and devastating effect of mental illness, drug addiction, and homelessness. In 1996, Hannah House took a strong step in addressing this issue by providing a second program; the THIERS program, focused on family reunification. This program, based on the original program model, is able to serve five families at a time and includes the areas of Togetherness and Independence.
The HERS programs and THEIRS program are next door to one another, enabling them to share staff, resources, and support among peers.

KaBOOM! is the national non-profit that empowers
communities to build playgrounds. We passionately
believe that play has purpose, and that unstructured
play in particular helps make children happier, fitter,
smarter, more socially adept and creative.
KaBOOM!-led Builds
From our inception in 1995, KaBOOM! has led over 1,500
playground construction projects that pair community leaders with funding partners who support our mission. These playgrounds are our hallmark, all-volunteer, done-in-a-day builds that serve as an achievable win for communities that need it most.
Do-It-Yourself Tools
In addition to these KaBOOM!-led builds, we offer Do-It-Yourself Tools, which provide online resources, including trainings, challenge grants, and publications for communities that wish to plan and build a new playspace on their own.
National Campaign for Play KaBOOM! also leads the KaBOOM! National Campaign for Play, which rallies individuals and communities to achieve better public policy, funding and public awareness for increased play opportunities. To help individuals achieve results on a grassroots level, we created the Playmaker Network, whose members are
the eyes, ears and voice for play in their communities. In 2007, we launched another component of the campaign, the Playful City USA recognition program, which honors the efforts of cities that create an agenda on play.
KaBOOM! inspires mass action for the cause of play, empowers individuals to take action on behalf of play and works to create playspaces through the participation and leadership of communities.
Please join us as we help create a more playful nation.
